Wow! What a cliff hanger! As someone in the crowd said "someone needs to write a book about this!" Well done Gippsland Strikers!!In what could be the most intense and bizarre finish to a grand final in Hockey Victoria history the West Gippsland strikers prevailed tonight in their VL3 match against Powerhouse St. Kilda Hockey Club. Looking down and out at 2-0 late in the third the strikers fought back through the efforts of some great team play resulting in Elliott Stephens slotting it home. A fierce last water tussle ensued when with 50 seconds remaining Jordan Oellermann penetrated the circle with a tomahawk that Matty Zurrer deftly deflected into goal. A stunned St Kilda who were undefeated all season took the shoot out by the horns and had two hands on the trophy when the match officials declared them the winners with the shoot out score at 3-1. Their team song was sung the black green and white ribbons were attached to the cup before it was discovered that the shoot out still had one more penalty to be taken.Enter the men of the moment - Goal Keepers Ben Knight and Cailean Thomas. Ben stopped two shots before falling hard and injuring his shoulder forcing him out of the game. Back up keeper Cailean Thomas had to suit up in record time and between him and Elliot Stephens who scored twice the ribbons were changed to black, green and yellow and the West Gippsland Strikers were declared victors.
